It starts, executes actions, checks if the goal has been met and, if not, iterates again (loops) until it achieves it or until a predefined stopping condition (guardrails) is reached. You give the agent a goal, not a prompt. It deduces the steps, executes them, reviews its own work, and continues.

Addy Osmani, another influential voice in this space, describes Loop Engineering as the process of “replacing yourself as the person who prompts the agent”. You are designing the system that does it in your place. It is a recursive goal where you define a purpose and the AI iterates until complete.

From Turn-Based Interaction to Autonomy

    • Attempts to compile.
    • If there are errors (e.g., a removed API), the agent looks for the replacement in the context obtained in step 1.
    • Applies the solution and recompiles.
  3. Testing Loop:
    • Runs the test suite. If tests fail due to behavior changes in the library, the agent adjusts the test logic or implementation to restore the expected behavior, documenting the change.
  4. Guardrail: Strict token spending limit. Large dependency updates can cause “goal drift” if the agent starts refactoring unrelated areas trying to fix a flaky test.

When the Loop Fails: Risks and Anti-Patterns

  • Human-in-the-loop: For structural or mission-critical changes, the loop should pause and ask for explicit review of the implementation plan before writing code.
