🤖 What really is GitHub Copilot?

Copilot is not “autocomplete on steroids”. It is a large language model (based on OpenAI Codex) that understands the context of your code.

To get the most out of it, you must stop thinking about “writing code” and start thinking about “guiding code generation”.

🧠 Context: Copilot’s Fuel

Copilot “reads” what you have open.

  • Open Files (Tabs): Copilot uses open tabs as primary context.
  • Cursor Position: What is above the cursor is more important than what is below.
  • Imports: Imports tell Copilot which libraries you are using (e.g., Hilt, Compose, Retrofit).

Pro Tip: If you want Copilot to generate a ViewModel that uses a specific Repository, open the Repository file in another tab. This gives it the context of the interface and data models.

The most effective way to control Copilot is by writing descriptive comments.

  • Translate: “How would this Java class look in idiomatic Kotlin?”

⚠️ Limitations and Risks

  1. Hallucinations: Copilot can invent functions that don’t exist. Always verify.
  2. Old Code: It might suggest AsyncTask or findViewById if it doesn’t see modern context. Ensure you have Jetpack Compose or Coroutines imports visible.
  3. Security: Do not ask it to generate API keys or secrets.
